Among the Hidden
This first book in a series called "The Shadow Children" written by Mary Peterson Haddix is a terrific read! It is a story set in a futuristic, dystopian world where the government controls everything... even how many children a family is allowed to have. If you break the rules and have more than two children, the third has to stay hidden. Luke is such a child. He has stayed hidden in his house for all of his 12 years! But that is about to change. This is his story, full of action and suspense. It also has a great message about civic action. If you don't like something going on, do you wait for others to act and bring about a change, or are you an active participant investing in it? Who did you relate to more... Jen or Luke? Explain with details from text.

I think that I relate a little more to Jen than Luke. Only because if I was Jen and my Dad was working for the population police, I would not be afraid to protest because my Dad would protect me. Also, because I would do whatever I think is right if I was in that situation. Based on the way Luke acts, you would think that he doesn't even care if he hides the rest of his life. (which he doesn't) But Jen does care. She doesn't want to be stuck in her house for the rest of her life, she wants to do what her brothers get to do, and what all of the other lucky first and second children get to do.
ReplyDeleteVery well said. I love how you made the connection about Jen possibly feeling more safe because her Dad was population police. Very nice detail.
DeleteI think I relate More to Jen because I like to do things on my own. And also I like to change the world not just sit around and wait until the world is changed.
ReplyDeleteYou did not really provide details from text. Good to know you would act, though.
DeleteI think I am more like Jen. I don't just sit back and wait for something to happen, I go out and do it, I make a change. So that is why I think I am more like Jen not Luke.
ReplyDeleteI think I relate more to Jen, because I mostly take action of things when stuff is happening. I never like to sit around and wait because when it does happen, and I don't take action I don't like the feeling of it. In the book Jen died trying to get freedom and taking action. I would rather die taking action then die sitting around waiting for it to happen.
ReplyDeleteExcellent. Great detail from story.
DeleteI think I relate more to Jen because she was not afraid to take action. An example might be in the book when she took charge against the government for shadow children in a march. I think I'd take charge more than just sit and wait for something to happen.
ReplyDeleteGreat response.
DeleteJen because i would go and say that's wrong you should let people have more children if they want.
ReplyDeleteThis is not a sentence. Repeat the question. FOr example, "I would relate mo re to..." ALso, you do not have any detail from the story.
DeleteI relate more to Jen because she just wants freedom like all the shadow children. She died to make the hidden come out and be free like us. This is way I relate more to Jen then Luke.
ReplyDeleteYou think you would be brave like that?
DeleteI relate more to Jen. I think that because when Jen was in charge. And in my house i'm in charge of my brothers. And Jen wanted freedom so she tried to get freedom and I would to.
ReplyDeleteYou gave a good detail and comparison, but careful with your grammar.
DeleteI relate more to Jen because, i'm more of a risk taker and I would like to be the one who changes the way the government controls us. I wouldn't want to wait for the one that gets to doing it first. I would go to the capital with Jen to get our freedom back.
ReplyDeleteNice response and detail. Watch your lower case i.
DeleteI think I am more like Jen. I relate to Jen more because I think I am always outgoing. I relate to Jen because like when Jen marches on the capital I march onto a soccer field to face another soccer team.
ReplyDeleteShe was definitely outgoing and you provided a good detail from the story, but I don't think those comparisons are equal, do you?
DeleteI can relate to Luke. Because he dose wait for someone to take action then start taking action for the three child limit. He starts to help Jen with the rally. He's afraid to take action but he takes action when Jen helps him with the three child limit.
ReplyDeleteI don't really understand this response. How do you relate? How did he take action?
DeleteI am related to Jen because I don't wait I just go for it.
ReplyDeleteShe went to the rally,I would do the same thing she did. I always go for it.
You are not "related" to Jen. That would mean you are in her family. You can relate to her. Big difference. Good detail from the story.
DeleteI relate more with Luke because, I sit back and wait for things to happen.
ReplyDeleteYou have no detail from the story here.
DeleteI identify more with Jen because I just get things done, like homework, I don't usually wait for someone to ask me, I just do it.
ReplyDeleteYou have no details from the story here. Also, do you think risking your life and homework are similar?
DeleteI think I relate more to Jen because Jen takes action and Luke does not and I would take action. Also because Jen wanted to die doing something right and I want to die trying to make a change. That's how I personally relate to Jen and not Luke.
ReplyDeleteNicely said with good detail from story.
DeleteI relate more to Jen because she just goes for it and wants freedom. If I was in the story I would go to the capital.
ReplyDeleteWhy? Is that in your personality to be brave and daring like that? You should have said that so I know how you compare...
DeleteI think I relate to Luke So I would still stand up to the government but not to a degree ware I could die like Jen. So I think I relate to Luke more then Jen.
ReplyDeleteHow is he standing up to the government?
DeleteI can relate more to Luke because when I get an offer I just think about it like Luke when Jen offered him to come to the rally with her.
ReplyDeleteThinking about decisions first is sometimes very wise. I should do more of that...
DeleteI Think I relate more to Jen because I don't like when I cant say I was part of something really important.
ReplyDeleteVery good point. That would be very hard. You should have mentioned the rally as a detail from the story, though...
